Measuring Mat Wells/Recesses
A mat well (or recess) is usually built after the floor has been laid and this means that often the corners are not perfect right angles and the sides are not the same length. This means that when measuring the size of a mat well all four sides need to be measured and not just one length and one width. If you are out by just a couple of centimeters on one side and we make the mat to the measurement you gave us, then when you lay the mat there will be a gap between the mat and the edge. This does not look good and more importantly, can create a trip hazard.
Measure Twice and cut once
If you have bought a mat to cut into a mat well or recess, make sure that you take the measurements and check them at least twice before you cut the mat. You can easily re-measure, you cannot re-cut if you have cut it to the wrong angle or too small
Filling in the mat well or recess
More often than not the mat well’s are made far to small to allow the mat to do the job you bought it to do – take the dirt and moisture off the shoe. For that reason, the size of the mat that would do this job properly is more often than not bigger than the mat well. The best way to overcome this problem is to fill in the mat well and lay the right size mat right over the filled in mat well. Now a days the heavy duty edging on mats will make sure that the mat lays flat on the floor and will not break up. In truth, there is no longer a need to have a mat well because of the construction available on the edges.
